Fabric is the foundation – it shapes look, comfort, and sales
Choosing the right fabric is one of the most important steps in garment production. Even the best design won’t look good if made from the wrong material. A poor fabric choice affects drape, comfort, durability, and ultimately… sales. So how do you pick the perfect fabric for sweatshirts, dresses, pants, or t-shirts? Here’s a practical guide for both new and growing clothing brands.
1. Match fabric to product type
Not every fabric suits every design. Examples:
● Sweatshirts, tracksuits – best with knit fabrics like loopback, brushed fleece, or elastane blends● T-shirts and longsleeves – lightweight cotton jersey, modal, or organic knit ● Dresses – viscose, linen, satin, or Tencel depending on season and style● Pants – sweat knit, cotton-elastane blends, technical fabrics ● Pajamas and robes – cotton knit, viscose, terry cloth, fleece
2. Consider the season
Fabric choice depends on the time of year:
● Spring/Summer – light, breathable fabrics: cotton, linen, Tencel● Autumn/Winter – heavier knits, velour, fleece, brushed sweat fabric● Year-round – versatile cotton blends with elastane
3. Test weight and stretch
Fabric weight (g/m²) affects feel and appearance:
● T-shirt: approx. 160–180 g/m²● Sweatshirt: 240–320 g/m²● Tracksuit: 280–360 g/m²● Summer dress: 120–180 g/m²
Check fabric stretch: 2-way or 4-way stretch is key for leggings and sportswear.
Step 4: Cutting & Sewing4. Prioritize quality and durability
Thin or low-quality fabric wears out fast — and customers won’t come back. Invest in fabrics that are:
● Stable in washing● Not see-through● Resistant to pilling● Certified (e.g., OEKO-TEX)
5. Order samples and test
Don’t buy fabric blindly. We offer sample shipping so you can check color, texture, and fabric behavior. Wash samples to test shrinkage and comfort on skin.
6. Don’t forget the accessories
Besides main fabric, you need:
● Thread (color-matched and strong)● Elastic bands, cuffs for pants, sleeves, hoods● Labels, snaps, zippers, tags● Reinforcement tapes (e.g., shoulder seams on t-shirts)
We can handle the full set — selecting and ordering accessories for you.
